Words are Mountains

Snow Xueyao Li works primarily in drawing and photography. Her drawings explore the interplay between language and image, allowing texts to guide and occupy visual composition. “Compulsion” and “Words Are Mountains” visualize obsessive-compulsive mental routines that search for repetition, rhythm, and reassurance. “Marlboro” illustrates the connection between desire, consumption, temptation, public marketing, and choice. Snow’s photographs, “Them Joyful People,” capture the complex tension in young adults’ interpersonal relationships, which are a site of comfort and inspiration as well as struggle and fragility. “The Crossing” witnesses fleeting moments of absurdity, anxiety, and alienation in the streets of New York City.
